In the fall of 1999, the
faculty and staff of St. Michael School began an intensive self-study
required in the process of becoming accredited. The self-study took
over 18 months to complete and resulted in an in-depth examination
of every facet of the school as well as a serious, top to bottom look
at both the Language Arts and Religion curriculums.
St. Michael School already
met or exceeded all state educational requirements, but it had never
been through an accreditation process. Under the guidance of the Archdiocese
of Seattle Catholic Schools Department, St. Michael joined with other
Archdiocesan schools to seek accreditation from the Northwest Association
of Schools and Colleges, and the Western Catholic Education Association.
The staff, students, parish
staff, and parents of the school all participated in this study. The
final study was published in December 1999. In those areas where the
self-study indicated a need for change or growth, the faculty and
staff developed action plans which will be implemented upon completion.
Following the evaluation
of the self-study by a visiting team of educational professionals
in the winter of 2000, St. Michael School was granted the maximum
accreditation of six years.
In May 2006, the school was granted another full term (six year) accreditation following the second two-year self-study process, the result of collaborative work involving students, parents, school staff, parish staff, and parishioners.
