St. Michael School Chess Team

The traditional game of chess is played as a team sport on two sessions each week. The Thursday afternoon session, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., is designed to teach the fundamental tactics to beginners and intermediate players alike. Students learn basic moves and employ this knowledge on the game board. The Tuesday evening session, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., is designed to teach more advance tactics and strategies. Our chess coach, who is a United State Chess Federation expert, challenges the students at all levels.

The chess team at practice

Look at all the captures!

In April 2000, the St. Michael Chess team hosted the Washington State Elementary Chess Championship at St. Martin's campus. In May 2000, the St. Michael kindergarten team placed first in the nation at the United States Chess Federation Elementary Scholastic Tournament in Dallas, Texas.

In addition to training and monitoring chess practices on Tuesday, our volunteer chess parents also host three chess tournaments during the course of the school year. Our team is frequently among the top ten teams in tournament competitions. Most importantly, the children develop their reasoning skill while having fun.
